Working from home (11)

Week #12 and #13: These two weeks felt like one: Two public holidays, two sick days, one holiday. Being sick with a cough feels weird in the present circumstances. My doctor told me she hasn’t tested positive for COVID yet. The restrictions a.k.a. lockdown obviously worked well.

I have more important things to emphasise: #blacklivesmatter  What are our current temporary inconveniences compared to what racism does to people? How can we live with the certainty that for every one million inhabitants, 30 black people are killed by police, or 23 Hispanics, but „only“ 12 white Americans? What must it feel like when you teach your 8-year-old daughter to raise her hands and say out loud that she is unarmed when the police are checking her?

It’s not as bad over here, but Oury Jalloh, Achidi John, Laye-Alama Condé, and William Tonou-Mbobda died in Germany under unexplained circumstances.

We white middle-class people must solve the problem of structural racism. Not those who are affected by it or who are marginalised. We must not only want to be confused with racists, we must always stop racist behaviour by everyone. Always.

Child #1 has now completed the Abitur.
